Katharos Beach can be safely considered as one of the most beautiful beaches on the northwestern tip of the island. It is located just 1 km from Oia and can be accessed via a paved road that takes off from the route from Oia to Ammoudi Harbor.
At the end of the road there is a small parking area and the Katharos Lounge Vegan Meze bar. As the name suggests, we can order vegan dishes in the bar, but apart from them, the bar has a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The beach is located only about 50 meters away from the bar and is accessed by a winding path (100 meters) surrounded by rocks and dunes.
This beautiful place has a dark story behind it. There used to be a port and a hospital for lepers, in which people coming to the island were quarantined so as not to infect the inhabitants of Oia.
The beach has no facilities. We won’t find a shower, sunbeds rentals or a toilet here. However, we are compensated by some beautiful views. The beach is about 250 meters long, which gives a chance to find a place even in high season.
A good place for lovers of wild beaches and diving, but we have to reckon with the fact that it can get quite windy here.
