In Oia, usually crowded and full of tourists, there is an interesting place that, in addition to an exhibition full of interesting exhibits, also offers some peace and rest from the heat and the hustle and bustle that usually prevails in the city.

It is the Maritime Museum in Oia. The museum was founded in 1956 by captain Antonis Dakoronias, who a few years earlier began collecting souvenirs related to the maritime history of Oi and Santorini.

Since 1990, the museum is housed in a renovated 19th-century manor house Kapetanospita (More information: Kapetanospita), donated by Oia’s resident Dina Manolessou-Birbili.

The museum is a testimony to Oia’s former glory when its economy relied heavily on maritime trade. Many sailors and owners of merchant ships lived in Oia.

The most interesting museum exhibits include, ship models, historical sailing equipment, tools and instruments useful during navigation (such as compasses, gauges, deck lamps), anchors, crates, ropes, gallons (usually made of wood figures placed on the bow of ships), sailor uniforms and sketches and drawings of ships.

On the first floor there is also a library of nautical books, logbooks, and maps as well as a collection of photos featuring sailors – residents of Oia.
