Balos Beach

Balos Beach
Greek name: παραλία του Μπάλου / paralía tou Bálou
Coordinates:  36°21’47.33″N, 25°23’42.41″E
Our rating: Worth seeing

Balos Beach in Santorini is a small deserted beach in the southwest of the island. On its shore you can find abandoned huts, the picturesque white church of Agios Nikolaos, boats decaying with age and the remains of sunbeds. It is definitely a beach for lovers of nature and mystery.

Natural environment

The beach is mainly sandy. If you want to take a swim in the Aegean Sea here, you should equip yourself with swimming shoes. The bottom is filled with pebbles and sharp boulders, and the local waters are inhabited by various creatures, including sea urchins. From the beach there is a stunning view of the Caldera and the volcanic islets of Nea Kamieni and Palea Kameni.

Balos is located 10 km away from Fira. Getting here with car from the capitol of the island will take about 15-20 minutes. Local transport is provided by buses departing from Fira in this direction several times a day. The end stop is in Akrotiri. The road from Akrotiri center to the slope where the descent to the Balos beaches is located, is possible to cover on foot in about 10 minutes. The descent to the beach itself leads on old, crumbling stone steps. On the way, we can admire picturesque caves carved in volcanic rocks.

This beach is definitely not one of the liveliest of places. It is small, wild, deserted and neglected, but it has its own charm. When looking for a moment of privacy, silence, you can safely hide and rest here.
