The Church of the Holy Apostles near Pyrgos on Santorini is not one of the most historic churches on the island, but it is also well worth a visit for its picturesque location and the beautiful views spreading across the area. The Church of the Holy Apostles is a branch of the Monastery of the Prophet Elijah.
Location
The church is located south of Pyrgos, on the road leading to the highest peak of the island of Santorini, Profitis Ilias.
History
The site where the church is located was previously used for different purposes. Historically there was the Old School of Pyrgos on Santorini, which was built in 1803 and opened three years later – 1806. It operated on this site until 1845. The church is located in the now defunct courtyard of the school. When it was in operation, the original church was located in a cave outside the courtyard. The school was taught by order of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
Architecture
The church is built of light-coloured stone. It has a dome typical of Greek buildings. Above the entrance there is a bell tower, which calls the faithful to prayer. The small church impresses with its details and subtle decorations, such as the wooden reliefs on the walls of the building. Near the church the stone ruins that remain of the Old School are visible.
