Kamari is one of the most popular places on Santorini. It is located on the southeast coast of the island. The long, black, volcanic beach is definitely the main attraction here, perfect for walks along the seashore. The Kamari Beach in Santorini is made of tiny dark pebbles and is about two kilometers long.
Public transport
Kamari Beach is less than 8 km away from Fira the administrative capital of the island. Numerous buses run here, and the journey takes about 20 minutes. The stop is near the beach.
Access by car
Getting here is easy. Roads are good and well marked. The trip from Fira takes about 12 minutes, from Oia 25 minutes, while from southern Akrotiri the travel time is usually 20 minutes. There are several large car parks within walking distance of the beach.
Surface of the beach
Although tiny black volcanic pebbles resemble sand, walking on them is not as pleasant as walking on fine, white sand found on some beaches in other parts of the world. Especially in full sun, it gets so hot that it makes it almost impossible to walk on it barefoot. The bottom of the sea is covered with gravel, so it is good to have water shoes with you. They will protect against the high temperature of the sand and the unpleasant bottom. The sea here is clean and perfect for observing the underwater life while diving. Unfortunately, it can also be restless and it is easy to lose ground under your feet. Tourists with children should not let them go alone.
Attractions and amenities
Kamari Beach offers a wide range of amenities. While walking along the promenade you will find numerous taverns, bars, pubs, sunbeds, umbrellas and water equipment rentals. In addition, you can use the freshwater showers and the toilet. Local sellers come here to offer their products to visitors. In the evenings, films are screened outdoors in a charming open-air cinema located nearby at the entrance to Kamari.
