On a hill located north-west of the town of Emporio, on a rise of volcanic ash, stands a lone, dilapidated windmill. But it is not the most interesting thing about this place.
To the south of the windmill the remains of a Minoan settlement were discovered. Excavations carried out in 1993 found, among other things, a fragment of a building wall, pottery from the late Cycladic period (17th century BC), including vases and other vessels, and objects imported from Minoan Crete.
From the hill there is a beautiful panorama – you can admire the town of Emporio, the seaside town of Perissa, as well as Megalochori and both coasts of the island of Santorini.
