Panagia ton Eisodion in Megalochori

The Church of the Ascension of Mary (Eisodia tis Theotoku, Great Virgin Mary or Panagia Trani) is located in the main square in the village of Megalochori on Santorini. The most distinctive feature is the carved white bell tower with a clock, which is also the gate leading to Nicholas F. Giannakopoulos Square.

Church of Agios Nikolaos near Megalochori

The Church of Saint Nicholas is located near the town of Megalochori and is picturesquely situated on the edge of the caldera, on the scenic route called “Heart of Santorini”, leading from Megalochori to the thermal springs of Plaka. The single-nave, whitewashed church is built into the wall of the caldera.

Cave and Minoan Cistern near Finikia

At the steps leading up to the Kira Panagia Church, about 80 m before entering its grounds, there is a cave entrance hidden in the rocks, 1.35 m wide and 1.7 m high. Behind the entrance is a corridor about 3 m long. The main chamber is about 20 m long and 15 m wide.

Churches of St. Paraskevi and St. Dimitrios

The two “twin” churches of St Paraskevi and St Dimitrios are located right next to each other on the edge of the caldera, between the villages of Megalochori and Akrotiri. In the area are the former quarries of Mavromitis (now Metaxas) and another church, Taxiarchis.

Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary

At the foot of the caldera, on the seashore, at the height of the village of Megalochori, is the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built into the volcanic rocks. It can be reached by the “Heart of Santorini” trail leading from Megalochori.

Church of Profitis Ilias near Imerovigli

The Church of the Prophet Elijah is located at an altitude of 304 m above sea level, on the southern slope of the Profitis Ilias Vouno volcano, about halfway between Fira and Oia.
It was built in 1750. It is a white building with a blue dome and a triple bell tower.

Oia Castle

The ruins of the Venetian castle of Agios Nikolaos. Although not much remains of the castle, it is one of the biggest attractions of Santorini and one of the most popular and most crowded places to watch the famous Santorinian sunset.

Plaka Thermal Springs

At the foot of the caldera, at the height of Megalochori village, there is a beach and thermal springs called Plaka. Water from these springs has healing properties. In the years 1916 – 1980 there were baths here.
