Beaches of Santorini
Santorini is not famous for its beautiful beaches. Tourists from all over the world come here attracted by the amazing volcanic landscape and numerous interesting sights. This however does not mean that you will not find fantastic places for sunbathing and swimming here. Quite the contrary!
On Santorini you will find more than 30 beaches.Among them there are both fully developed beaches with showers, toilets, deckchairs and umbrellas and access to cafes and bars, and those completely wild, where it is difficult to get to, but characterised by peace and quiet (you need to bring your own provisions, drinks and beach accessories such as an umbrella and a blanket).

The beaches on Santorini from the side of the Kaldera (west) are not easily accessible (only a few are accessible by an asphalt road). The sun rises on them late and relatively early in the afternoon they are in the shade. Due to the characteristics of the coastline, the water quickly becomes deep. However, this is compensated by the fantastic view of the Caldera and all the islets of the Santorini archipelago.
Beaches on Santorini from the east have a relatively flat descent to the sea and are mostly covered with fine, dark, volcanic sand. The beaches at the tourist towns of Kamari and Perissa stretch for many kilometres along lively promenades filled with cafes, restaurants and shops.
On the north-eastern Santorini you will find several beaches less developed, quieter, but with equally easy access to the sea. In the south-east, several “geological gems” are worth visiting, including Red Beach, White Beach and Vlychada Beach with its amazing volcanic sand formations.

In the north-eastern part of the island lies a picturesque bay of Pori. It is a resting place for residents. They like it because of the calm nature of the sea and the well-sheltered beach. The reddish rocks surrounding it are arranged in the shape of a crescent, thanks to which people relaxing here rarely have to worry about the raging wind.
Armeni is the former main port of Oia, but now mainly small boats and private yachts moor here. It is not a beach per se, but there is a descent and access to the sea, so some tourists take the opportunity to bathe. It is a small, rocky beach with large black and red rocks protruding from the sea.
Baxedes Beach (also known as Paradisos) is located on the northern coast of Santorini, east of Cape Mavropetra, at the height of Finikia. The name Baxedes comes from the Turkish word “Baxes”, which means “garden” (the locals grew vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, eggplants, carrots, zucchini, lettuce, and melons).
Balos Beach in Santorini is a small deserted beach in the southwest of the island. On its shore you can find abandoned huts, the picturesque white church of Agios Nikolaos, boats decaying with age and the remains of sunbeds. It is definitely a beach for lovers of nature and mystery.
Katharos Beach can be safely considered as one of the most beautiful beaches on the northwestern tip of the island. It is located just 1 km from Oia and can be accessed via a paved road that takes off from the route from Oia to Ammoudi Harbor.
Agios Georgios Beach in Santorini, or St. George’s Beach, is located in the southeastern part of the island, on the coast known for two other famous beaches – Perivolos and Perissa. Agios Georgios is basically a continuation of Perivolos beach, but it is less popular, and therefore less crowded, so it is a great alternative for people who value both comfort and peace.
Kambia Beach in Santorini is located in the southwest of the famous volcanic island. It might not be the easiest one to find, but when you finally get there you will be impressed with the views and peace that prevails here. The rocks surrounding the beach have taken fanciful shapes as a result of the action of water and wind.
The picturesque Theros Beach in Santorini is located slightly off the beaten track, between Paralia Vlychada and Paralia Almyra. It is a place where you can taste good Greek food, relax and even get a massage!
Thermes Beach in Santorini is located on the south-west coast of the island, near the village of Megalochori. It is a disorganized beach. There is no infrastructure, no restaurants, tavernas, sunbeds or toilets.
Ammoudi Beach is located south of the port of Ammoudi. This is not a typical beach with sand and umbrellas – more a fragment of the wild, rocky, volcanic coast. Perfect for diving enthusiasts. The water is slightly warmer than in other parts of the island, it is also characterized by higher sulfur concentration.
