Dominican Convent located in Fira on Santorini is located in the Catholic part of the island’s capital Fira. The nuns living in the convent are representatives of different nationalities. Inside the convent there is also a baroque church of Our Lady of the Rosary consecrated in 1825.
The Panagia Katefiani in Perissa on Santorini is a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary built into the hillside of Mesa Vouno above the village of Perissa. The church is located on the trail from Perissa to ancient Thera. The walk from Perissa takes about 15-20 minutes.
The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin is located on the Fira – Oia trail, on the southern slope of the inactive volcano Mavro Vouno, just before the last section of the trail from Fira to Oia. Due to its location, it is a popular stopping point for walkers.
The Church of the Ascension of Mary (Eisodia tis Theotoku, Great Virgin Mary or Panagia Trani) is located in the main square in the village of Megalochori on Santorini. The most distinctive feature is the carved white bell tower with a clock, which is also the gate leading to Nicholas F. Giannakopoulos Square.
The Church of Saint Nicholas is located near the town of Megalochori and is picturesquely situated on the edge of the caldera, on the scenic route called “Heart of Santorini”, leading from Megalochori to the thermal springs of Plaka. The single-nave, whitewashed church is built into the wall of the caldera.
The two “twin” churches of St Paraskevi and St Dimitrios are located right next to each other on the edge of the caldera, between the villages of Megalochori and Akrotiri. In the area are the former quarries of Mavromitis (now Metaxas) and another church, Taxiarchis.
At the foot of the caldera, on the seashore, at the height of the village of Megalochori, is the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built into the volcanic rocks. It can be reached by the “Heart of Santorini” trail leading from Megalochori.
The Church of the Prophet Elijah is located at an altitude of 304 m above sea level, on the southern slope of the Profitis Ilias Vouno volcano, about halfway between Fira and Oia.
It was built in 1750. It is a white building with a blue dome and a triple bell tower.
One of the oldest and most impressive of its kind is the Orthodox Monastery of Prophet Elijah (Monastyr Prophet Elias). It is located on the highest peak of the island of Santorini (567 meters / 1860 feet above sea level).
